NM Selby Anderson is best known around the state for his fifteen
years as editor of Texas Knights (1988-2003). In competitions he has won
the San Antonio city championship eight times, the Southwest Open three
times, and the Texas State Championship once. In 1997 his book on the
Center Counter Portuguese was the first monograph in print on the
popular opening line, and it was cited Nunn's Chess Openings. He has
been active as a tournament organizer since 1989, including several
Southwest Opens and the 1999 U.S.CHESSathon. He has been teaching chess
camps and after-school programs since 1991, including USA Chess in
Dallas (2000 and 2001). His most famous former student is Sarkis Agaian,
13, who is on the 2005 All-America Team. Selby continues to publish the
San Antonio Chess Club News, and has been working with a community
development group (American Sunrise) on their inaugural "Chess Fiesta"
scheduled for August. This June he is directing the Polgar Girls' Q!
ualifier for Texas.
